On March 8 and 9, Mr. Broomhead’s 8th Grade High Ability English class read to the Marsh Elementary School students. The Attales Middle School class was put into groups and read a book to everyone’s class.

In the beginning of each class, students were instructed to put their names on tickets to get a chance to win books at the end of the period. After reading the book, each class took part in an activity.

On March 8, the eighth grade class read to kindergarten, first, and second grades. In Mrs. Hincks’ second grade class, we read the book, “Click Clack Moo, Cows that Type.” The book talked about standing up for what you want and those around you. Afterwards we did some activities relating to the book, like walking around and taking surveys on how many students would give Farmer Brown’s cows electric blankets. Surprisingly, the majority said that they would not do it. Some other activities we did was listing other farm animals and illustrating them.

On March 9, the eighth grade class read to the rest of the first, third, and fourth grade classes. Mrs. Leiti’s fourth grade class read “More than Anything Else,” which talked about why reading was important. After reading the book, the students did an activity to draw or create their own favorite book cover. At the end of the activity, we treated the Marsh classes with ice cream or water ice.

While the Marsh students were eating dessert, it was time to draw the lucky winners, with about two or three winners per class. As their prize, they received new books.

Overall, it was entertaining and exciting to meet new people and inspire them on their road to literacy. We look forward to more opportunities to read with the elementary kids.
