Santa Claus, also known as Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, Father Christmas or – just simply – Santa, has been the face of Christmas for many years. But not many know that there are multiple interpretations throughout history.

Saint Nicholas was a Turkish saint during the 4th century who gave gifts to the poor of his city. He is the foundation for every version of Santa Claus throughout the world.

In Belgian and Dutch folklore, Sinterklaas is a Santa-like character who comes on either Christmas or Dec. 6. He also rides a horse named Amerigo and has workers called Pieten.

Amu Nowruz is an Iranian character who comes early in the spring to mark the beginning of Nowruz, the Iranian New Year. He has a companion named Haji Firuz, who helps him give out gifts.

Ded Moroz (or Father Frost), is a character is Eastern Slavic folklore, predominantly in Russia, Ukraine, Poland, Slovakia, Belarus, Armenia and Slovenia. He is usually accompanied by his granddaughter, Snegourochka. Ded Moroz wears a long blue coat and carries a magic walking stick. He delivers gifts to children on New Year’s Eve.

Many cultures have had their own interpretations of Saint Nick, but they all convey the same message of kindness.
